Six MUST HAVE Apps For Budget Travellers

If you’re a fan of budget travel then these apps are for you!

In the era of digital nomad lifestyles, safety and budget have never been higher on the list of ‘travel must-haves’.

Here, I’ve compiled a list of six apps that make travel easy, safe and inexpensive.

I’ve categorized them so you can skip through to the things that are important for you.

From how to find cheap flights and how to find free events in new countries.

Cheap flights and accommodation for budget travellers

I found this one while searching “how to travel for free” because that’s just the kind of person I am.

Couch surfing is a little bit like Air BNB meets Tinder. It’s not for romantic purposes, nor is it for finding rentals.

They explain it best themselves in their App Store description.

“Couchsurfing is the best way to stay with amazing locals or host travellers coming to your hometown. The platform is a gift economy; hosts are not allowed to charge for lodging. It is based on the idea that people are generally kind.”

This app is perfect for budget travel. It allows you to find free accommodation! You also get to make some friends along the way.

This is the ultimate budget travel hack!

Skiplagged skims through all of the available flights. It’s algorithm then makes combinations that are as cheap as possible.

Sometimes it’s a flight with layovers where you actually jump on a different flight. Sometimes it’s a hidden flight that a website hasn’t advertised.

Skiplagged will find the cheapest option for anyone who has a little extra time up their sleeve.

Skiplagged makes travelling so cheap that United Airlines tried to sue them. And lost. Here’s what Skiplagged have to say on their website:

“Our unique algorithm shows the cheapest regular flights and hidden-city flights faster than any other site. This results in savings of up to 80% using Skiplagged.”

So if you want to know how to get the cheapest flights this is probably a goldmine for you.

Next up: Hopper Airfares! Another way to get cheap flights and inexpensive accommodation for budget travellers.

This app, Hopper predicts airfares up to a year in advance! This helps you choose when the cheapest time to travel to your dream destination will be.

In their own words from the App Store:

“Hopper predicts prices and helps you book your flights and hotels at the right time, saving you up to 40%”

If you’re not limited to time constraints, or you’re able to take work off far in advance, you’ll find the best time of year for budget travel on Hopper.

Best safety apps for millennial or solo travellers

As much as we don’t like to think about it, an emergency is something that we have to be prepared for.

Having your emergency contacts on your phone saved under ‘ICE’ is a great way to stay safe while travelling.

Although, in a grave situation, it’s only really helpful if someone finds and unlocks your phone.

If you’re travelling on your own, that isn’t ideal.

So, what does ICE actually do for us? Here’s their App Store description:

“ICE Contact is a free personal safety app that delivers instant & delayed messages In Case of Emergency (ICE). This App provides peace of mind for every situation and can help save your life.

Choose a friend or family member and tell them how they can help In Case of Emergency. (You can include a picture or enable GPS Tracking*.)

Send an Instant Message for emergencies OR create a Delayed Message and we’ll deliver it anytime you want. (You’ll receive a reminder before it’s sent.)

Messages are delivered via In-App Notification, Email or Text. Even if your phone dies or loses service. (ICE Contacts do not need the App to receive messages.)”

The fact that this app sends messages without service or battery is one of the best features, ever.

If your phone is on the GPS tracking is really helpful in getting you out of a tricky situation. Like being lost in a brand new city.

Travel Safe

Travel Safe has been winning travel app awards ever since its invention, and its no question as to why.

This savvy little app contains all of the emergency contact details, embassy details and more of the places you’re travelling.

Most of the features are also available without an internet connection. You’re able to search no matter where you are.

A really helpful app to have on hand and stay safe!

There are free and paid versions of this app. This review gives the most insight into which one is right for you.

Things to do on a budget travel holiday

Event Seeker

Event Seeker is a bit like the Google of the event world.

Okay sure, Google pretty much has everything covered search wise. So, if you’re a little bit hesitant to switch, then I totally get it.

It’s the exclusive offers that Event Seeker offers that really sells me on it.

In their own words:

“We are the event search engine in the world! Concerts, comedy, sports, festivals, you name it — so you always know when the next show is coming your way. Relevant and exclusive content to our audience who are culturally-conscious event-goers and who are in the thousands and growing.”

If you’re looking for something to do in a new place or want to book tickets to events in advance, eventseeker probably has what you’re looking for.

It even has a list of free events! If you’re a budget traveller you’ll never be bored around these parts.
